Hi:

I seldom use this tractor in the colder weather but recently I had the opportunity and so I put the batteries in and it started. What a nice surprise. Mind you it did not run smooth. This tractor always did run rough until it warmed up.

While waiting for the warm up to occur I noticed that the exhaust manifold had puffs of smoke and vapor coming out. On a closer inspection it looked like there is a hole at the base of the exhaust manifold for the first two pistons. Is this normal? The hole looks like it is part of the manifold (ie not a crack and not a burn hole) almost like a drilled hole. I could not see the same for any other pistons.

The vapor coming out seems to be partially burnt fuel. So you see a white puff and then the block receives moisture. Remember now that the tractor is missing or runs like only 4 or 5 cylinders are firing. Once the tractor warms up (2 or 3 min) the missing stops and the vapor and white puff disappear. I always have visions of a bad head or two bad cylinders but once the tractor warms up it seems to work ok. (I do not have anything to compare it to.)

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Ande

Tag on the dash says 932 and front end is wide with adjustable setting. No 3 point.

Pam it sounds like we have identical tractors, I wish mine had a 3 point though.

Yes a 3 point would be nice as would a FEL. Maybe Santa would drop one by next month.

A friend of mine saw smoke come out of those holes on my 930 once and told me that the manifold was shot. I laughed and told him why they were there. He had a hard time believing that a company could come up with an idea that good. Don't worry about those holes. Wish I still had that 930. One of the best tractors I ever owned.

Right. Sorry about that. It is a 930 8 speed diesel and yes it does bang and cough and sputter and then purrs when warm.

Thanks for the comments.

The 2 holes in the bottom of the manifold are supposed to be there, my 930"s have them too. Yours must be a later 930 with the muffler toward the front of the engine, one of my 930"s is a "63 & it"s muffler is at the middle of the engine but it still has the drain holes in the manifold between #3 & 4 cylinder. It sounds to me like everything is normal, you didnt say if your"s is a gas or diesel, my diesel will miss & bang when cold, almost sounds like a gas engine backfiring, but after a few minutes it is fine.

Wild guess but it sounds like one of the power cells plugs missing. If thats the case you should have a constant noise????
