I've got a Case 310 crawler with a bad engine. My question is: what tractor engine will be a direct bolt in? The engine is a 148 gas. I don't know Case equipment and am not sure how to identify what series 148 this engine is. As I read in the forum there is a 148 and a 148b and they don't interchange? Also any help in locating a replacement engine will be appreciated. Thanks--Larry

Hi CH...The computer went down after my inquirey. You said the easy way to tell what 148 engine I need is by number of starter mount bolts. Mine has two bolts. Do you have an engine? Email me a phone number, I would like to talk with you. Thanks, Larry

The engine block has a Case insignia. I"m sure its not a continental as I am very familiar with continental engines. The engine is repairable but it would be too exspensive with the damage that has been done and parts missing. I haven"t found any block numbers though.

Larry, The early 148 uses a by pass oil filter
system, that filter is mounted on the block to the rear of the distributor .Filter has large knuckle threads ( like a light bulb ) and filter base is mounted to the block with 2 bolts. That ehgine is also used in the 300 ( round nose ) tractor. When that model became a Case tractor it got a
case engine , prior to that it was a terratrac and had a continental engine , there were quite a few other changes also.

How bad is your engine , unless there is a big hole kicked in the side ,almost any thing is repairable.

I think some of the older 310's used a Continental F 140. A 162 is just a bigger bore. I don't know if they will be interchangable or not. F 162's and the later 163's were used in Lincoln welders. Hope this helps. Dave
