I have noticed some weird things when I have posted stuff here too. When I posted a couple of photos in the "Tractor Photos" area it didn't put the hyphen in. I typed 930's and it came out 930S... Go figure?

OK... a couple of suggestions...

Try typing on a blank word document, and see if it does it there too. If it does, then it might be an issue with your keyboard. Is it old and worn, or are you using a newer computer? If you have access to another one, try swapping the keyboards, and see if it still does it.

Is the keyboard real dirty? Might try a can of electronic cleaner, spray it real good in the keys, and see if that doesn't fix it. I work in a hotel, and our computers are constantly used, and they do tend to get dirty / wear out, and the quick solution is clean it first, or if all else fails, replace the keyboard.

My keyboard is fine. I"ve typed for 40 years and know the difference between quotes and apostrophes. This problem is ONLY on this forum.....When I type the reply in the box, everything looks correct. But when I go to the preview window and then post, the apostrophes magically change to quotation marks....

Okay, now this has got me curious:
'single quote'
"double quote"
Maybe Mac users are getting a different character sent than a normal single quote?

Just to stir the pot a bit- I have the same problem with typing an apostrophe ( ' ) and not quotes ( " ) and I'm on a Mac using either Safari ( Apple browser) or MS Explorer. BEYOND that: Why is it that folks are now using the apostrophe BEFORE the 's' when attempting to show possession when that configuration is meant to show a contraction? Example: - Joes' tractor - means the tractor that belongs to Joe, whereas - Joe's tractor - means Joe IS tractor? I see this all the time on the boob tube, web-pages, etc. Most of us are pretty firm when it comes to expecting immigrants to learn the English language while we continue to 'dis-learn' it! Call me traditional, a nit-picker, a stick in the mud, etc. but that is what our culture is based on; contrary to the old saw of 'Rules are made to be broken'. Whew ..... . glad I finally got that off my chest ..... now I can go back to turning wrenches! P.S. Let's see how many of my apostrophes end up as quotation marks.

Joe's tractor is being painted. (possession singular) The Smiths' are painting their tractor. (possession plural)

The proper (possession plural) should read:
The Smiths' tractor is being painted.

There are inconsistencies in the English language.
mouse is singular
mice is plural
blouse is singular
Shouldn't the plural of blouse be blice?

Let's get back to talking about tractors!

WHAT!!!???!!! The apostrophes (') and the quotation marks (") came out exactly as I typed them! I feel empowered, equal and liberated! However, I think I detect Kims' fine hand in this. If so: THANKS, KIM! :-)

I think I have it figured out..... in reply to mj, 11-15-2006 07:09:51
MJ,

I'm finally slowly seeing a pattern. Only my first post, when I log on, makes the apostrophe - quotation problem (see the quotes in my post above about the Case 800 fuel problem, but note this post is correct). If I come back while I'm still logged on, and make a second post, everything works fine. Which makes me think the users not having any trouble are set up to accept cookies and don't need to log on every time. This is my latest observation, I think. My browser dumps cookies every time I close it, so I have to log on pretty regularly.

As far as the proper use of the apostrophe to show possession. Actually, the apostrophe is used in front of the "s" to show possession by a singular noun, such as, Larry's Case, for the Case that belongs to Larry. The usage is the same if the apostrophe is used for a contraction of the verb, "is", for example, Larry's not very smart, for Larry is not very smart. But if the apostrophe is used to show possession by a plural noun it comes after the "s". For example, the dogs' howling is correct if a group of dogs are making the racket. The dog's howling is correct if a single hound is baying. There's more (for pronouns), but this is probably more than anyone wants. As has been noted at other places in this forum, we accept any English so long as we can understand each other. I'm a teacher, but here, we're all just Case folks....

Hmmm....interesting, though I do have my browser set to accept cookies.....time will tell or.....maybe not. AND as for the use of the apostrophe, here's all I remember beyond what I've already buried myself with: As Terry Prachett once said "a greengrocer goes so far as to use greengrocers apostrophes in speech. :-)

I thought I'd read all of them. Which Terry Pratchett book is that from?

Best punctuation book ever: "The Well Tempered Sentence" by Karen Elizabeth Gordon (though "Eats Shoots and Leaves" is supposed to be good, I bought it just before I packed up to move and haven't read it.) There's always Strunk & White, too. I'm trying to figure out a way to tie this into tractors, but my observation has been that tractor folks and English seem to be at opposite ends of the shed and not speaking to each other.

I wasn't trying to be smart. The shift key is just under the ' key. Now that you mention it, I've had wierd things happen as well. A couple of times when I'm typing a response, all of a sudden there is a big gap in the paragraph, like I hit the enter key half a dozen times. I've had double letters come up and couldn't move the the start of the next paragraph over. Thanks for bringing this up. I didn't think I was that bad of a speller. I guess we must have keyboard demons. Dave
