Why did the 1170 become the 1175?

If it's the reason of cc and other upgrades, why didn't the 770, 870, 970, 1070, 1270, 1370 and 2470 run from 1970 to 1973 with the desert sunset/orange, and then from 1974 to 1978 why didn't Case produce the 875, 975, 1075, 1275, 1375, 1575, 2475, 2675 and the 2875 with the red/white color change?

OK boys, here is the real scoop as told to my Dad & myself by Harry Kline, himself in 1988. I asked Harry, the famed CASE engineer, the same question. Harry said the 1170 was originally designed with Rice farmers in mind, but that it was really too heavy. It was lightened up & renumbered the 1175. Harry listed all the changes, some of which were the front axle. He told us how much lighter the 1175 is, but I can;t remember.

Thanks John for the real scoop. I was going by what the service reps and instructors at the Racine service school told us (about 1973). I guess the guys at CASE didn't always agree.

When the 1170 came out it was a "big horse" but problems soon showed up. The center wheel in the differential was not hardened correctly at the factory and soon they wore out, some in a matter of 50 hours. Also there was a problem with the air cleaner that let dirty air into the engine. Because the 1170 had a bad reputation the model number was changed to 1175 after those problems were fixed.

Interesting. So most 1170's still around have long since been fixed?

I would think that should have been covered by the warranty. Must have cost Case A LOT when you consider parts and labor of repairs, the bad reputation of the unsold 1170's ect. Somebody's head must have rolled.

Not an ignorant question! Have often wondered the same thing. Have a neighbor who bought an "1175". It is 1170 with white paint and decals. Don
