I'm curious; when did Case go to direct injection disels? The 830-930 diesels were not direct injection, right? Were they less efficient than the new direct injection engines?

The 1470 with the first 504 engine had direct injection in 1969. The little 188's had them around 1967 in the 430 and 530's.

Ted
Case started direct injection in 1970 with the xx70 series. With direct injection, they were able to get more power from the engine with fewer heat damage problems. The specific fuel effeciency was dowh with direct injection, but power output was up... Gene

The 70 series engines also had the intake and exhaust manifolds on opposite sides of the head. Probably cooler intake air.

Thanks Gene, was the 1030 just a turbo charged 930? Was it direct injection? I've had people tell me that they thought the 1030's had as much or more power than the 1070's but used less fuel. True or not?

You can look at it sort of like this. The 930 diesel engine was the same as a 730 with 2 more cylinders. The 1030 engine was the same as an 830 with 2 more cylinders. I believe the heads were even the same and would interchange, 730/930 and 830/1030. The change in the heads on the later 70 series engines with the direct injection and the exhaust and intake on opposite sides led to more power under cooler conditions in the cylinder head. It also allowed more airflow into and out of the engine. Those old powercell engines were hard to beat on the old 30 series tractors in many ways. The fuel efficiency was unbelievable, but the 70 series engines weren't far behind them.

The 1030 was a bigger cubic inch engine, 451 and the 930 was 401. The 1030 did not have a turbo but that would cool! It still used the powrcell indirect ingection system. As far as the HP the 1030 was just under 102 HP with 12.01 HP hr/gal and the 1070 was 107 HP with 12.62 HP hr/gal. So I guess fuel consompsion was a little lower but so was HP. Hope this helps. When I was around my Dads dealership a 931 with a factory cab was traded in with a turbo, let me tell you did that tractor sound nice. Another one that sounded nice was a 1175 with the baffle taken out of the muffler,it also helped fuel economy and more ponies!

I was told the 930 was a 6 cylinder version of the 730 and the 1030 was a 6 cylinder version of the 830 with heads and internal parts such as pistons and connecting rods interchangable. Anyone know if this is true?
