Went this weekend to pick up a Case 1570 from a guy about a hour away from us. While we were there we noticed a Case 800 WF and 830 NF in the junk row. Both tractors have been there many years and are stuck. Tires all flat but, ok tread. Sheet metal good. They are both diesel with 3-point. He wanted $1,000 for the pair. Does this sound like a good price??? Are engine kits available???

If the 830 is an early production it will have a COM (Case-O-Matic) torque converter/clutch. The 800 will certainly have COM. We have both on our small farm and I personally like the COM system but some folks don't seem to understand the operation so don't like COM. Be aware that the COM is quite reliable but expensive and more difficult to repair than a standard friction/dry clutch. Verifing function of COM is quite impossible unless the engine runs.
Also, don't expect the tires to be useable even though they look reasonable. Brakes on these tractors are dry mechanicam discs and if the unit sits awhile the seals will die and the brakes will get oily and NFG.

Hey Jim,
How does the COM work anyway???
I always see them for sale, but shy away from them for lack of knowledge on how they work.

Thanks, Tuggle

In a word, I think, they work GREAT !!
The mechanics are quite simple and effective >>>instead of a conventional, dry, friction clutch >>> the clutch is a multi-disc hydraulic unit driven by a torque converter which has an internal lock-up clutch. This offers a Low Range so-to-speak, within any of the manually selected 8-forward & 2-reverse gears.
The clutch pedal actuates a hydraulic valve that makes the tractor always start moving in torque converter drive. Therefore, the operator always shifts into gear while idling and uses the accelerator to increase tractor speed after any gear is engaged, much like a car with an automatic trans. After the tractor comes up-to-speed, the torque converter lock-up clutch is engage, with a lever on the left side of the steering wheel, which engages direct drive. If, while pulling a high-draft load, and the engine RPM begins to drop >>> the torque to the wheels may be increased (without changing gears) just by disengaging direct-drive which again engages the torque converter for Low Range.
The operator must understand how this system functions or they just seem to hate it. Quite different than a conventional clutch but much better functionally if the operator learns how to control it. Pretty wordy but I Hope that helps.

Make sure the rats have'nt chewed holes in one or more tires. Them old flat tires make for a mighty fine nesting spot.
