Nine massive 150 HP hauling engines were made, in addition to steam rollers. Case engines were noted for their use of Woolf valve gear, feed water heaters, and iconic eagle smokebox covers.

The first 40 x 150 HP Case steam engine was developed and built at the J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company Engine Works at Racine, Wisconsin, in late 1904. This was not designated as a Road Locomotive (R. L), but was called a "Sample," or experimental engine. The serial number was 14666, and I have compiled the history of this great engine through the years and conducted much research, including the gathering of information on the eight more 150 HP Case engines that followed and were called "Road Locomotives." It (#14666) was billed as "The World's Largest Traction Engine" in 1904.

I will now go into detail about the history of Case 150 HP engine #14666. The story is quite lengthy and I have verified the facts through several sources. I will follow up with the known history of the other eight 150 HP engines.

goto this site and seach for 150 HP and you will find 2 stories on them.

In an nutshell and best I recall, it was sent to a mine out west originally. The mine eventually didn't have use for it and it sat for quite a few years (I believe the mine closed, and it was abandoned) until an enterprising person thought the boiler would make a great water tank (can't rememeber if it was at a mine or ranch though.). George Hedtke (Ill, now deceased) came across it and had it at shows for a few years in the 90's. Last year or the year before it was purchased at auction by the gentlemen from rollag who thankfully kept it on U.S soil, unlike many of hte steamers at his auction which went overseas. If anyone else has any input or corrections, please add. My memory is a bi fuzzy on some of the details.
