580B backhoe power steering pump problem-help?

Yesterday I lost all power steering except when the front wheels were off the ground. Since the steering worked when the wheels were off the ground, I figured it was the power steering pump not the hand pump in the steering column. Took the power steering pump off and found the drive gear very hard to turn by hand. Took the pump apart. took out the bearings seals etc. cleaned and looked for wear. nothing.Put everything back and the pump turned freely UNTIL I bolted on the rear cover of the pump. As soon as the bolts force the rear cover to be flush with the pump housing-the pump will hardly turn. Puled it apart and reassembled 3 or 4times-still the same.Anyone have any ideas? I may have driven the pump for a while without enough oil since the reservoir was dry when I took the pump apart. Maybe it overheated and warped something, but it didn't look like it. Would appreciate anyone who has had this trouble or knows what might be wrong. Thanks in advance.
