Double outlet manifolds

We have a case 311 loader tractor from the 60's. The manifold has two outlets on it , one is capped. The back outlet was likely for an under the tractor exhaust, the front outlet for a vertical exhaust. I think the tractor doesn't sound right using the vertical exhaust because the outlet is almost dead center of the second from the front cylinder. Even when the tractor is running fine it sounds strange, one dominant cylinder sound. can this be good for the valves etc or should the front be capped and the back outlet redesigned for vertical muffler?

I think all your going to do with a jury rig elbow back there is increase the back pressure some, not good. The muffler is the only significant restriction now and is keeping the pressure in the manifold pretty much equal throughout. Just my opinion. I have 2 300's, one vertical off the front outlet and the other underslung off the back outlet.

BTW 311 is 1956 or 1957, the 311B is 1958 or 1959. 311 ain’t one of them modern 60’s tractors.

Two things here the manufacture designed this system so I would assume they new what they were doing when they did as all of their tractors have thesame system a vertical exhaust in the center of the manifold.

Numer two if you put the exhaust right near the back then it is going to be right near the gas tank and and your face it is hot and I do mean hot. I know this because the PO who owned my LA put the exhaust right near the back of the engine and it was hot and I do mean hot. I moved it forward where it should be.
