Does anyone know the date that case switched from the 3-speed to the 4-speed trans on the DC. Mine is a '42, and I think it is still the 3-speed. I could be wrong, as I haven't got to run it much yet, bad rear tires.

Thank you all for your input. It was bugging me so I went down to my friend's farm, where I have the DC in a shed working on it, and I checked, and it is a 4-speed. I just forgot because I haven't got to use 4th, yet. Hopefully I'll have the new tires on in the next couple of weeks. My dad-in-law is coming, and I hope to let him take her for a spin. Yee-haw!!

The D that I got from Dug does have 4th gear in it and this tractor is on factory rubber so I am sure it had it right from the factory. I have a another 1939 D that is older and came on steel and has the 3 speed in it, I also Have a 1939 DC which the son of the origanal owner told me was a 3 speed when his dad bought it, it has a 3 stamped on a pad at the rear of the transmission housing. Unfortinatly they added 4th gear and a new trans cover to in in the 50's. Jeremy

We once had a D (serial number 4301142) that had a C stamped block, and the serial number tag on the toolbox had a the open side of the C stamped closed. I can't rightly remember if was a three speed or not though; you'd have to ask jeremy hoff on that.

I have a 3 speed DC. SN 4302009. It is the only one that I know of. DC Tom has told me that none of the build cards show any notation about 3 speeds. The only 3 speeds were very early 39's, and most were put in export tractors. I think a lot of them had the 4th gear put in later because I have found a couple that are an earlier SN than mine and they were both 4 speeds. I have never looked, but mine must have fast final drives in it because it moves about 9 MPH in 3rd gear. The easiest way to tell if it is a 3 speed is the vertical movement of the shifter. The shifter only moves about 3 1/2" up and down. Please ad a post if you know of any other 3 speeds. DK

DKase,
Is your 1939 DC on 38" or 36" rear rims? My dad"s got a "39 DC-4 that came on 36" rear rims & has a 4 speed trans (SN# 4302568 & build card says it was shipped with 36 inch rears from the factory). If your final drive gears seem to be fast, could it be possible your rig was supposed to have 36" rears on it?

DCTom says below in this thread that only the D models had the 3 speed from the factory and were exported to Canada. Was the trans in your "39 DC ever swapped out that you know of?

We had sort of discussed this a long time ago. I asked all about this 3 vs 4 speed question a few years ago on this board. It was said then that the first 500 "D series" of 1939 got the C series 3 speed but they were all shipped to Canada. This news from DCTom about only D models, not DCs getting the 3 speed is new to me. It was never detailed as D vs. DC before, only all inclusive as "D series"...

-Mark

I forgot to mention that mine came from ND, so it is possible that it came out of Canada. I do not know if the rear end was ever switched but that might explain the fast gears. The tool box, and SN plate were missing also. It does have steering brakes though. I guess that makes it anyones guess. DK

That is the first that I have heard of the D, and DC concerning the 3 speed also. I was always told D series too. Mine has 38" rears now. I do not know what it had originally because it had no rims when I bought it. 38", or 36" would have the same final drives, as the outside diameter of the tires were nearlly the same. My thought was someone put in different final drived to get down the road a little faster,

I believe the first 500 DC's were converted CC's and had 3 spd. and most were exported to canada ect.

I haven't seen any in person but I read somewhere that Case many a couple hundred 1939 DC's with the 3 speed because they wanted to use up the CC rear ends. I think there was one on Ebay a year ago up in Canada. DCTom would know for sure.

I have a 1940 DH and a 1940 parts DC that are 4 speed... not sure if they actually made a 3 speed. Some manufacturers did lock out the higher speed if the tractor was sold on steel but I don"t know about Case.

I"m interested in finding out though. It"s not like I haven"t been wrong before. :)

I really think it was a function of being built on steel. I believe 4 speeds were available from day one. You could add the forth gear.

Was it only steel? I ask, 'cause as far as I know, mine was always on rubber. But, like I said, I could be mistaken, as I've only run it down the driveway on bad/flat tires.

During WWII, especially near the end, 1944, there was strict rationing on rubber. It could be that the few tractors made were built for steel and then rubber wheels added later. I can't believe that they would build a rubber tire tractor with only three speeds, but it could have been special order. If DC Tom has the build card that would tell you, but if I remember correctly he does not have the war years.

THE CARDS DONT SHOW ANY 3 SPEEDS BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT THE FIRST FEW HUNDERD "D'S" WERE RESTAMPED "C'S" AND THOES WERE THE ONLY 3 SPEED DRACTORS, TO MY KNOLEDGE THERE WERE NO 3 SPEED "DC'S" UNLESS SOME ONE CHANGED A "D" TO A "DC" FROM THE FIRST BUNCH, THE CARDS DO SHOW THE "C" CROSSED OUT AND "D" PENCILED IN BUT I HAVENT TAKEN THE TIME TO COUNT THEM.
