I need to replace the starter ring gear on a 730 CK gas, with 8 speed transmission. Does the flywheel and clutch assembly have to be removed after the tractor is split to replace the gear? Any advice from someone who has BTDT would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Texaswren. Knowing the gear comes off of the front of the flywheel makes the shop manual make better sense. Thanks again.

I just did this on my 830CK. Because the ring gear comes off the front of the flywheel, the only way to get it off is to remove the flywheel. Driving it off isn't too hard if you're careful and go around and around, driving it off a bit at a time. After driving it off, I went around the face of the shelf the ring gear sits against with a stone, smoothing out any dings that I put in the edge that might keep the new ring gear from sitting flush. The ring gear I got from A&I was a very tight fit. I had to put the flywheel in the freezer overnight, and put the ring gear in a 400 degree oven to get it to go on, and it took three tries.

This is a good time to replace your seals, input shaft bearing and flywheel O-rings, too, and to see if your flywheel needs facing. On mine, when I got in there, I discovered my flywheel needed replacing because of the serious cracking.

Good luck!
