Case 2590 engine flutter...

Dad and I have a 2590 with around 5k hours on the engine. It is very tight, as it does not use a drop of oil over a good week in the field.

But, it has an odd problem, when pulling grain wagons to the elevator the engine will flutter from about 1800 rpm on up. It is not constant and a sweet spot can usually be found. I does use excess fuel when this is happening, as indicated by puffs of black smoke. I seems to happen when the engine is trying to get into the govenor, but when it is pulling hard or with no load it does not do it. Also the exhaust temp. will climb to about mid green when the flutter is happening. If you can find the sweet spot to smooth the engine out the temp will drop to the bottom of the green rapidly.

Anyone got any ideas?

On rear of pump there are two adjustments you can do - Top small adjustment is for idle speed-nezt one down is larger with a cap that you remove carefully .- When you remove cap you will see a screw an with engine idling turn it clockwise until idle speed increases-than back off a fraction an that should cure problem called looping that i believe you have.

This is a common question. My 1570 does the same thing, as did our 970. Worn cab mounts can contribute to this. My 15 pump has never been apart so i wonder if pump wear is part of the problem.
