Hi, My club is having a plowing day, some bean stocks and some in disk corn stocks. I have a Case La 1948..with no hyd. I have a 4 bottom trip 16 plow w/colters and a 3 bottom trip 14 w/colters... Since I never done this with this tractor ..was wondering which plow I should use and what gear should I be in.[ don't want to look any stupider than I am ] What I been reading this is a 4 or 5 bottom tractor....I know land is different in different parts of the country...I'm in Iowa...the middle of it.. I want to THANK any and ALL ADVICE I get in advance....I read this site ever nite and get a lot of advice from other people questions.. THANKS....Mark

Have been to a ploughing competition to day in England (UK) with my `44 Case SC the only Case out of 90 people taking part. Also the only tractor with 3 wheels. I use a 2 furrow plough 10 inch spacing.Hand clutch and 3 wheels make driving straight difficult.

I'm looking forward to here how your LA preformed. I have a '49 LA w/hyd. and a 4-14 plow. You've received some good advice here. I too would start with the 3-14. I have trouble with the break-away hitch if the ground is real tight. These old LA's will work though.

I used to farm in this area and if you are north of Des Moines you are probably in the Clarion, Nicollet, Webster soil association. This is a silty-clay-loam and I used to pull 4-16's with an IH 560. Your LA should handle 4 bottoms if it is good shape. Make sure it dosn't overheat in a pull.

I have an LA that is pulling at around 80 draw bar HP I have pulled my 4 bottom but its not easy in this hard clay soil.
This summer with no rain I was down to my two bottom in hard clay. It was too hard even for the 3 bottom. If you can put a shovel in the ground with ease then use the 4 bottom 1st gear. These LA's are geared pretty high in 1st ans 2nd. You might want to start with the 3 bottom and work up just to be sure of the ground. She will pull a 5 bottom in soft ground but hard ground can give you fits. My 3 bottom has the trip hitch and it trips in hard clay so much that I can't use it. If your ground has been worked a lot then the 4 bottom should no trouble. show those Ugly green things what real pulling power is all about and let us know how you did.
Hope this helps Walt

You will probably have trouble plugging up on the disked corn stalks with the 14 inch plow-just not enough clearance for the amount of trash. Even a 16 will plug up in corn stalks. If your LA is in good shape it should pull the 4-16's all right, just plow shallow (6 inches and in 1st gear to start with. In sod I would suggest the 3-14 plow. Good Luck!

Personally I would take the 3-14s and run in second gear, save the 4-16s for a day and feild when nobody is watching (lol) that way you can decide the gear and depth with no one to see if you mess up...
