Have never owned or been exposed to the Case tractors but am looking at a 401. Could anyone give me some feedback as to what I should look for as far as weaknesses or concerns? It is a diesel and it has narrow front. it has 3pt and power steering. any response would be appreciated and thank you for your time.

Most 401 owners won't sell. That should tell you a lot. As far as being heavy for the horsepower, the horsepower to weight ratio has steadily increased from day one in cars, trucks, and tractors. More horsepower with less weight generally just spins the tires. My diesel 401 has great power and traction and doesn't burn a lot of fuel. The neighbor borrowed it one day to pull a loaded cement mixer out of a mud hole. A few parts are hard to find but most are available. The pto shaft splines are too soft and prone to wear. The three-point is prone to bend the links if you get up-pressure on it. Not a perfect tractor, but mine ain't for sale. I personally don't won't buy a narrow front tractor but I'm an old guy who doesn't like to take risks any more.

That tractor has a good reputation. Some say the best Case made. I think the only weakness is it's heavy for no more power than it's got. I assume it's a roundnose model. The square 400b was quite a bit less powerful and lighter.
