I was looking at mine today and was wondering if mine is on backwards. The lever is very close to the battery shelf, and I have scraped knuckles on occasion when engaging. I wonder if it is supposed to offset in toward the steering shaft or out towards the wheel. It appears that it would go on either way, and there would be quite a difference in clearance.

Reversing it may solve the problem, but I think they are offset towards the steering shaft when new. When everything was new/tight, it cleared the battery stand OK.

My 2 '51's are the same way. they've got a lot of play side to side. I thought it was caused by the bushing or bolt being worn. I'll have to go out and see if turning it arond will do the trick.

I think all of my DC series have the lever set away from the battery box towards the wheel as you described. Unless you enjoy skinning your knucles (and you probably don't)switch it around.
