A couple of months ago i had the hydraulic pump replaced and the mechanic told me that 4 range in the powershift was leaking, but i decided to do nothing about it. Recently when i start the tractor and push in the clutch, the tractor will stall out. It only does it sometimes and when it does happen i have to keep trying many times before it will quit stalling out before i can start working with it. Does anyone happen to know what the problem is? I found a similar topic about a Case 2290 and they recommended rebuilding the powershift tranny. Is this the only option or are there any adjustments i could try before having to undertake a splitting of the tractor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i"ll give your advice a try and take a look at the contorl valves.

Note: When i puch the clutch in it moves the powershift lever back to first range automaticaly, and so i have not been able to try starting the tractor in a different range position. Thanks

It's most likely the C-2 shuttle spool sticking, it's in the control valve on the right side of tractor, and on the valve body's under edge there are sveral plugs(most take a Allen wrench)I'm thinking with out the book but it's the 2nd or 3rd plug front the towards the back( look at the valve side plate seems like it's marked C-2 down low), remove it and there is a spring and a spool should fall out,(but probably not cause it's stuck)it has a threaded hole for a 10-24 machine screw, screw one in and pull it down and out,and chuck it up in a drill and smooth it up with some fine emery cloth(400 grit)until it will slide backup in it's bore and WILL just fall back out. Try that.

A stuck C2 pilot spool will cause an "eng stall" ONLY in 2nd range. The problem is in C3 or C1.pilot spools. Polishing spools too much will give a greater tolerance between spool and bore and agrivate situation. If repeated pilot spool sticking is encountered, facings are worn off old style C1 plates causing metal to metal contact creating filings. C1 plates were inproved in 94 series tractors.
