A friend of mine has a case 400 diesel. He just turned 90 and wants to have his "ole 400" restored. The tractor has been outside for 15 years. The sheet metal is complete with some rust The tires are low but not flat at about 50%. He will pay for the parts. I haven't worked on a diesel before but I am wondering about this model and its value after being restored. Where can I find out the age etc. of the 400. Thanks Nilram

Nilram,
It does not matter how much it cost according to you. The 90 year old gentleman must like that tractor allot. These 400 racine tractors were J.I.Case first new line in years.
I have 3 off these tractors and when I get the shop up I am going to rebuild them, One came from Colorado. Best of luck with the restoration.
Jerry

Is the is the "big" Case 400 with the rounded grill with circular plastic medallion? If it is, it is either a 1956 or 1957 model. The other Case 400, is a 400B which is a smaller and later model with a Case-o-matic transmission.

This one has the round medallion. Any thoughts on if it is worth working on?

I'd love to have one of those. It is supposed to be one of the best tractors Case ever built. So for me, it would be worth working on. The engine had such heavy main bearings that I've seen them with 15,000 hours on them and the lower half of the engine was never touched. I figure a set of rings and some work on the head will be all that's needed engine wise.

It depends on the condition of the tractor. New tires would cost you about $900.00. An engine overhaul would be about 1500.00 To rebuild the injection pump on a diesel could be as much as $1000.00. A crankshaft and bearings could cost you another $1000.00. To convert to an alternator is about $100.00. A new clutch w/throwout bearing could run $400. It adds up quickly, especially if the tractor is very worn out. If it had been used lightly or has low hours and not much is worn out it may be a good candidate to fx up. If it was used hard and/or heavily worn, it will cost you a fortune. Believe me, I know. Don

Thanks Don for the input. You may have scared me off. The 400 has been used for several years although he did always service his machines well.
The next step is up to him. I think he may just want it to look pretty and run. We'll see.
Thanks again.

Find serial number tag and go to the serial number listing in this forum (left hand navigation bar toward the bottom under "Research & Info"). This gives the beginning number of the sequence for each model at the first one to roll off the line in that year.
