I have been reading about unsticking an engine. I've read about turpentine and auto transmition fluid, diesel and brake fluid and I was told the best is iodine and something. Has any one heard what goes with the iodine? Are there any other recipes that work better that products on the market. In Canada most of the good products have been taken off the market.Hope to get some good info.
Thanks Dave

Was talking to a couple of old tractor guys yesterday who have both used iodine. One mixed it half and half with turpentine and the other used half a bottle of Iodine with a gallon of methel Hydrate. Both say it freed pistons that couldn't be hammered out. One got the recipe from a rebuilder. After letting the iodine set for a while, he had a heater and pump and pumped hot oil through the engine and then freed the engine. A mechanic I talked said he took the head off and dumped diesel in the top of the cylinder and lit it on fire. Just before it burned down to the top of the poiston he snuffed it out and pounded the piston free. There are sure lots of ideas when you ask the old guys. We have to save all these idea to pass them on. (Great idea for a book)
Thanks for your help
Dave

An old time mechanic told a friend of mine that Sloan's linement will loosen rusted parts. My friend tried it on a manifold, and it worked. Just passing this on, as this certainly will be lost over time.

All those forulas are a crap shoot. Here is the sure fire method. Take an old spark plug and knock off the porcelin. Weld on a 1/2 inch pipe coupling and hook up a hydraulic hose. Take off the valve cover and & find a cylinder with both valves closed. Hook the spark pug to that cylinder then remove the rocker arms (just in case your problem is a stuck valve) . Try to locate a cylinder that is nearer the top of the stoke, and the apply some pressure. Try not drive the piston to the bottom of the stroke, so that once it is loose you can rock it with a crank. This works courtesy of DC Tom.
