I am replacing the front crankshaft seal in a 188 diesel and I noticed a grove is worn into the crank pulley. Is this groove supposed to be there? I didn't think it was and I was going to have a machine shop weld it up and turn it back down smooth.

Fred.

Fred, Any compitent Machinist should be able to run a reamer though it to bring it back to size at a lot less cost than sleaving. We are not building rocket here it doesn't need to to be perfect.

See if there is a Speedi-Sleeve that will fit.

Welding it up will tend to shrink it, making it TIGHT to press onto the crankshaft, so be carefull about that.

Thanks Bob. That's exactly what my machine shop said. So, they are going to sleeve it.

Thanks.

Fred, On older equipment that had leather seals this was a common thing to happen. The leather was rather hard on the soft metal of the pulley.
You are correct in what to do with it. Walt

Thanks for the info, Walt. I wondered how a rubber lip seal would have worn into it, but that makes sense.

Fred.
