I've had this 310 Case loader tractor for a very long time, but it has always had a persistent problem, you can always smell unburned gasoline when it is hot, it is not missing, doesn't smoke black...I have checked every line and conection, there is no fuel leak so it is a carb problem I'm thinking. Could this be a float set too high that is causing this. We have used the tractor very little in the last 5 years but recently rigged up a hay prong for it so I better look at it...its a puzzle because it seems to run fine but hard on fuel. I cleaned the air oil bath, lots of flow, the carb adjustment screw will lean out the carb until you stall it, yet when you have it purring and the tractor gets warm there is that unburnt fuel smell...I'm stumped ....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Generally, when the carburetor is too rich (float level, sticking float) the engine runs rich and black smoke comes out of the exhaust. The smell of unburned fuel is likely caused by a loose fitting or small hole in the fuel line. Sometimes the leak is so small, it will not drip. However, the heat of the engine will evaporate the fuel from the very small leak, and you will smell the vapors.
