I resently purchsed a case 400 case-o-matic. After searching this case forum and internet, I have gleaned some information, but have a few questions yet. I want to figure out the year and wanted to know if there was a site I could look up the serial number? It is a gas burner, narrow front end, and the headlights in the hood above the grill. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that makes it a 400B, 35 HP tractor. The axles are really long and it looks like I could mount another set on the back. Is that the reason? This tractor has been sitting for at least 10 years (number of rings on the trees growing through the loader), is there anything special I should do before starting it other than the obvious. (dump all fluids, etc) I new to the case-o-matics.

There is is a site on this forum to check your serial number look to the left under Research & info.

I would replace any oil that looks bad or smells bad the engine should be changes and new filter added. the tranny can be checked pull the bottom plug to check for water and then check it for looks and smell. If all ok leave it.

Thanks Walt. I"m new to the site. I found the serial number link and looked up my tractor. It"s a 1958. Dropped the oil in the motor. There was some water, to be expected being parked so long outside. The transmission had no water in it and the oil looks clean. Now I have to tear off the tin around the motor and open it up. Who know what secrets lurks in the motor?! Said it ran when he parked it, but why let a good running tractor sit for 10 years? Could be though, either way, it"ll be in adventure. Thanks again.
