Case Question

My neighbor just purchased a 1987 model 1494 (?) Case 4 wd with a David Brown engine. I have yet to hear it run, but he says it sounds good, it has electrical issues with starter / alternator that he is working on. It also has leaks on both hydraulic pumps in the front, but he says he found rebuild kits on line for them for $45/each.
I have no experience with Case products, I would like to here others thoughts, comments, experiences with these tractors. Any helpful tips would also be greatly appreciated as neighbor is a self-admitted "city-boy" that has just moved to the country and doesn't know anything....Thanks.

The tractor is all David Brown, by the time it was built the engine had got as much power as could be got from what is basicly a 1930s design. It still has a 3 main bearing crank shaft and bottom end troubles are not uncommon on tractors that have been given a lot of hard work. The back end and gearbox were all beefed up and oil immersed disc brakes fitted to cope with the extra power and wieght. Its replacement which I think was going to be called the 1496 used the CDC (Cummins) engine in the prototypes but never saw production due to David Brown Tractors parent company - Case and the International harvester company merging in 1985. The 1494 was dropped although there were some red ones produced untill (as far as I can remember) there were only 1394 and 1594 tractors being sold just before the plant was closed in 1988. For serious hard work the 1490/94/10 and 12 tractors I would not recommend, how ever on a lifestyle block doing moderate work it should be as good as anything else of comparable performance and age.
