I have been around Case tractors for 50+ years but never any VACs. I now have a '48 VAC in the restoration process. A couple days ago I noticed a little "L" shaped clip riveted to the clutch pedal that will hold the pedal in the disengaged position when the clip is positioned right. My question is. What was the purpose? Did it have somthing to do with disengaging the clutch when doing belt work? Thanks for any info, just curious.

My Case 1943 SI had a simular thing it was attached to the floor board in front of the clutch you moved it into position to hold the clutch in the disengaged position. I used it to keep the darn thing from sticking it was a time savor when you let the tractor sat for sometime.

If you are trying to start a tractor with a hand crank in the cold it is easier to do if you don't have to turn over any tranny gears in heavy oil.

If the engineer had a reason I"d bet this is it. His clutches weren"t supposed to stick.

From what my manual says and others I've read. do not use it when warming up the tractor, especially in the winter, as damage could result when driving the tractor. "channeling" in the gear lube will result.

page 88 case va tractors operators manual rac 532 6th reads as followa

a swinging latch is attached to the clutch pedal. this latch may be swung down to hold the clutch in a disengaged position. however do not allow the tractor to operate for extended periods with the clutch depressed.

Well no, the engine clutch has to be engaged to run the belt pulley.

I think the main purpose was to warm up the engine w/o having to turn the belt pulley (if in mesh) and the drive all the way back into the transmission.

Or for any reason you may want to run the engine w/o having the clutch engaged.

Also it is often used to keep the clutch plate from rusting to the flywheel during long layup periods.
