Case 430 clutch?

Have a new problem with my Case 430 diesel with triple range. Occasionally while the tractor is idling in neutral, I'll hear three or four short metallic clunks and the tractor will sort of surge forward--wheels don't actually turn, but it leans forward for a second and then settles back. Could it be the throwout bearing? Would appreciate any ideas.
Thanks, Lee

Well, you did say ANY ideas. :-)

I wonder if the range forks or shift forks might be getting sloppy, and a gear could be wandering into collision with a nearby gear, causing it to engage briefly? Is this with the range gear in neutral, or the main gear (or both?) One thing it shouldn't be is the throwout bearing. Once you take your foot off the clutch, the bearing shouldn't be in contact with anything spinning.

Makes sense. The triple range is in drive, and the shifter in neutral. Is there a neutral on the triple range?

The problem is NOT the clutch or triple range. Yes, there is a neutral position for the triple range. If you put the triple range in neutral, the problem (surge) you are describing will NOT occur. Of course, that does not solve the problem. The problem is in the transmission. Something is causing the input shaft in the transmission to momentarily connect with the output (pinion) shaft causing a forward surge. If gears are grinding as the forward movement occurs, there is a problem with gears clashing. The problem will be in the transmission shifting cover or forks. Is the transmission oil at the proper level? The only other possible cause is the transmission oil slinger. The input shaft (neutral or not) is always turning an oil slinger on the output shaft. It's purpose is to pick up gear oil from the bottom of the transmission housing and sling it around to lubricate the input shaft bearings. Otherwise, the input shaft bearings would NOT get lubrication during prolonged periods of a neutral transmission shift position. The oil slinger is located on and spins on the output shaft. If it's running dry, or it's seizing onto the output shaft, that could cause a brief connection between the input shaft and output shaft with a resulting slight surge forward. Check the condition of the oil slinger on the output shaft.

Thanks for the response, Roger. The transmission oil is clean and up to level, so I'll try to check on the slinger this weekend.
