I have been searching through the forum archives trying to find out some info on rear axle seals for my 49 vac. I have the new seals already in posession and just yesterday after much work was able to remove one of the old seals(VT3749)and am now ready to go back with the new one. After removing the old one I saw what a big difference there was in the thickness of the new and old seal and then I thought I remembered reading on here one day that it took two of the new seals for replacement of the old one. Was this a dream I had or the truth? And if it only takes one of the new seals, how deep should it be pressed in the axle housing? Thanks for the help! I hope I am not going crazy! Ha!! Case

Thanks for the help! I knew that I had read on here about using two seals as a replacement but wanted to confirm my thoughts. I will take the advice of DCTom and use one in an unworn location. That also sounds better due to the price of those seals! Oh well whatever would be the best. Thanks again for the info. Case

You aren't imagining things, there was a thread about using 2 seals to replace one.

Other than your comfort there isn't any real advantage to using 2. Chances are you are replacing a leather seal with a rubber seal. The rubber is a much more effective a leather seal. If you did install 2 seals, the outer seal would never see any lubrication and wear out quickly. Fortunatly you would never know because it isn't really needed.

I agree with DCTom you should install the new seal to a location where the sealing lip does not run on the same location as the old one.

one should be fine, good thing is with the thinner one you can position it so it dont run in the same groove that the old one made in the last 50 years, tom

I do not have an answer for you but as you can see I have posted a question today as well. Where, other than here are you getting parts and information on your 49? I am doing my restoration in honor of my grandfather and need lots of help as I have never restored anything like this before! Your time and expertise would be an asset to my project! Thanks, Brendon Childers
