Can someone explain to me how the governor gear would affect the timing on a tractor. Allis 1949 B. I have the cam and c/shaft timed and was going to put the governor gear in later, but now understand that the three gears should be timed together. I have a distributor, not a mag. In looking on the governor gear I can find no markings as to position. I have thought about this for some time now and cannot understand why it would matter how the governor gear is put in.
Someone please help me to understand so I can do this correctly. Thank you..... .....

Later Distributor Housing in reply to Cman, 01-01-2008 13:32:22
I did not know they use that housing before 1950 on a B. I knew they used it in 1950 when the CA went into production. You are totally correct with that setup. No timing mark on the governor gear.
I was assuming that yours was like the one on the left. Yours is like the one on the right that was from a CA.

I replaced my 12 v distributor On my 51 B with a magneto from the same tractor. I notice that the female governor drive is a bit smaller that that which came tihe the FB magneto.
Will this work okay? I did the timing and it won't start yet.

Dick, thank you very much for your reply. I was beginning to think I had lost it. Folks talking about things like mag drive slots and springs and such, things that I had not seen. Anyway I will assemble it tomorrow, and worry about timing the distributor down the road, don't think I will have any trouble.
Thank you for helping me put this puppy to bed.

You need to also check ther pin that connects the mag.drive adapter to the shaft. I got a complete govener assy. for a WC/WD from my bother's Father-in-Law to make a magneto test stand. He wanted the gear/shaft assy. back as all I needed was the casing and the adapter for the mag. coupling. When I disassembled the unit, the pin connecting the mag coupling adapter and the shaft was worn about half into letting the coupling adapter move on the shaft which would cause and engine with alot of spark scatter. Be sure to check this point during a engine rebuild.

That governer gear has to be timed! BTDT. also it is marked, you may have to wash to find it. good luck, The teeth are marked on both gears.

Maybe A Better Explanation in reply to Cman, 01-01-2008 13:32:22
After thinking about the details and connecting it to your question of (Why the governor gear needs to be timed) The magneto has a stop post that catches the pawl that will hold one end of a clock spring. This spring is released to spin the rotor just as the magneto/distributor drive passes the horizontal position. This causes the rotor to produce the electricity to cause spark to the plug. The clock spring has to be released at the horizontal at TDC to be able to start the tractor. Looking at the other mechanical parts of a magneto you could make a case that it could be set to fire on TDC with the magneto/distributor drive in any position if you are not looking for the internal electricity needed to be produced at the proper time on start up.

To it sum up: The clock spring must be released at the exact time you need spark to the spark plug or the engine will not start.

With a distributor it won't matter. You should be able get the number one cylinder on TDC and then drop the distributor down in last so when bottomed out the rotor points to the number one plug terminal. It is just unknown details that when missed can cause problems down the line. If you or someone else later trys to install a magneto and when on top dead center the magneto drive is not horizontal they will never get it running with making a governor gear change.
If you don't care and your tractor runs I see no reason anyone should care unless they just bought the tractor from you and want to use a magneto.

The SIMPLE fact is that when #1 cylinder is at TDC, having ended the compression stroke, the mag drive slot in the flange on the governor shaft should be HORIZONTAL.
If you have the crankshaft-to-camshaft timing marks lined up, and the drive slot horizontal, youre "good to go".

Well the gov. gear is what drives the distributor so if its not timed right then the distributor will be a lot harder to time
