If it only leaks a cup per month, it isn't serious and doesn't need immediate attention. However, the PTO is the lowest point in a major lube reservoir that includes the PTO, wet clutch, transmission and differential. It should contain the heavier 80W90 lube rather than the lighter hydraulic fluid or 10W or 20W non-detergent oil called for in the hydraulic system reservoir. Hydraulic oil can leak into the large reservoir through a leaky seal; not uncommon and a major maintenance project. As JMS/MN notes, replacement of the PTO rear seal is not a major pain. However, the new oil seals will be very thin compared to the original Chicago Rawhide seals of 55 years ago. The stub shaft is often scored and it may be difficult to stop leakage with a new sleeve alone. The use of a Speedi-Sleeve might remedy the situation. If not, new stub shafts are available for $120, or you might find a good used one considerably cheaper. As long as the heavy lube has been kept topped up, no damage will have occurred. However, if not kept up, serious damage will occur to the wet clutch, possibly followed by the transmission.
