I'm getting ready to help a relative "unstick" an engine. Looking at the manuals for sale,... which would be the most appropriate for general engine specs?, detailed engine overhaul?. The engine is a four cylinder gas.
Thanks

Peace

Milo, this is Randy, that you used to work with in galesburg. Nice to see your still around. I live up north MI. now. May have some other manual to help you. 231.238.8836

OK, I have the I-T manual. The head is off, and the sleeves are pulled. Three of the pistons had to be driven out with a piece wood and a 2 lb hammer.
(not pretty). The #1 piston (most forward)was fairly free. The rings all floated within the lands.

After removing the rings (and while the sleeve was still in the block) the piston/sleeve clearance was in excess of .012. So it looks like new sleeves and pistons.

The valves are in very poor shape. There are exhaust valve seats (option?) the intake valves are worn beyond grinding (in my opinion).

So, I guess I'm going to finish disassembling the head. Have it hot tanked, then I'll bead blast it, check it for cracks, and take it to my valve grind guy.

Thanks for all of replies and advice.

Peace
Milo

Get an "IT" manual from TSC or the local equivilent.

Pour the cylinders full of kroil. She'll free up. You probably have some stuck valves too, though, so you might end up pulling the head.

Unsticking an engine in reply to Milo Holroyd, 12-28-2007 18:54:11
Here"s a method I"ve heard about. Get an old spark plug and break the glass bits out of it. Then weld a short pipe on the end. Drill a hole in a pipe cap and thread into it a zerk fitting. Now, remove the rockers and be sure all the valves are as closed as they can be. From here, work **VERY GENTLY.** Thread the whatzit into the sparkplug hole of one of the cylinders. Fill the cylinder with grease until you feel a slight back pressure. **STOP** Do the same for the other three cylinders. With luck it will break free at this point. If not, go back to each cylinder one at a time and apply **VERY GENTLE** pressure. You"re using hydraulic pressure to move the pistons, and you have literally tons of force at your disposal. If you do not work GENTLY, you will bend piston rods or crack the crank or break the head or or or...
This is better than the air-chuck method, as you have control. With air, you are compressing the air. So, once things start moving, they"ll move fast. Grease does not compress. So, the moment you stop pumping, things stop moving.

Thanks for the replies. I tried soaking the pistons for a couple months. I was able to get some of the Marvel Mystery Oil back into the oil pan. So I guess all of the pistons are not stuck.
However, the ones that are stuck, are stuck good!

Started pulling the top of the engine apart last night. One stuck valve, so far.

In regards to the manuals, I have the "Operating Instructions and Repair Parts Illustrations" manual.
Model# WD 45 Tractor serial #189454
Engine# 45 50122G
Looking at the available manuals this >WD-45 Gas and Dsl Service Manual 100 Pages (Part No: AC-S-WD,WD45)< looks to be the one I need. Yes?

Peace
Milo

The other guys have told you what manuals you need. My self before doing much to it I would fill the cylinder with tranny fluid and let it sit say a month. Top it off every few days as needed then go form there. After a month you may find it will turn over and be ok. BTDT many times and doing so will save big bucks
