When I pull on the starter rod sometimes the starter just spins without engaging the flywheel. Is it time to replace the starter?

I agree with Rich, Id just worry about the starter drive (bendix) first cuz all else including the much more expensive entire starter may be fine. After cleaning Id use that white lithium grease on it. John T

Starter drive is either dirty or going bad. I would pull the starter off and spray the drive with brake cleaner and the put it back on and see if that helps. If it doesn't then you either need a new drive or the teeth on the flywheel are getting real bad.
