I"ve heard noises in CA"s and D-12"s that you would swear were something in the torque tube, but turn out just to be the clutch pedal/linkage rattling. Rest your foot against the clutch to see if it stops.

Don't forget to check to see if the final drives have fluid in them, they'll howl like a cat stuck in a boot, if they're dry!

Throwout bearing will make noise on my WD untill I push the clutch in and it stops. My WD does make a lot of tranny gear noise, and it has fluid. On the WD it is common to have such rear end tranny noise, and it sounds like thats what you have. I dont know if it is common for the B to have it or not, but all WD'S I know had it, just the way the gears are made and meshed.

A worn or dragging brake band might be a possiblity. The scraping or grinding noise would be hard to locate as it travels through the whole tractor, and it would be any time you're moving.

Sorry It's a allis 39 B. I have no throw out bearing noise when in neutral and push clutch in or out. Noise only when moving and in gear, push in clutch while moving noise goes away. Thanks DS

Ok. You don't describe the noise - I know that is hard to do with words. I read your original note again and thought that I read it made noise when the clutch was in. Since it makes no noise when the clutch is in, you are correct in assuming the throw out bearing is Ok.

Since the noise is in all gears, it does sound like a bearing. Be sure there is oil (30W) in the transmission. There are only 4 bearings in the transmission. Since it is all gears, this eliminates the bearings on the lower gear cluster so it only leaves two on the main shaft. If the front bearing fails, the seal usually goes as well giving another symptom - leking oil out of the torque tube. There are two bearing on the differential. Your comment that it is in the torque tube points to the front transmission bearing. But noise does travel and often isn't always heard where it originates.

I don't think I can get closer than that. Disassembly is the only way to find it. If it is the front bearing, you may be able to determine this by pulling the shifting forks cover of the side of the transmission. If it is a bearing for the differential, removing the rear case (with PTO and Hydraulics) might help identify it.

I am assuming this is different than standard gear noise. Some can be quite noisy but still completely usable.

You do not tell us the tractor model - could be important. Since you say "torque tube" in the heading, I'm going to guess it is a B, C or CA. "Moving with clutch in" or "not moving with the clutch in" generally suggests throw out bearing as George suggests. However, the throw out bearing usually doesn't make noise when the clutch is out and would not be related to coasting down hill. If it is one of these three tractors, you will need to remove the engine to start trouble shooting. To remove the engine, you'll need to remove the radiator and front end (though you may have a way to split the tractor without removing front end). The first thing you'll come to is the throw out bearing. You'll need to just work your way back until you find the problem (if it isn't the throw out bearing, linkage or clutch fingers). Your description actually suggests more than one problem. Strongest suspicion suggests problem with throw out bearing, linkage for throughout bearing and/or clutch fingers. Beyond that, I'd be guessing.
