My WD turns over very slowly, almost like hand cranking. Every so often it"l crank normaly. Very rarely. I pulled the starter and cleaned the ground connection between the starter and the engine. The wiring is good. I put anew heavy-duty cable from the batt to the starter. I cleaned up the connection from the batt ground cable to the frame. I pulled the starter from the engine and turns over nicely on the bench. I"m at my wits end with this thing. Any ideas?

go to a welding supply house they keep [0] & [00] welding cable on spools ...will cut what you want...Kent

My WD45-D did the same type of thing. I put new bushings and brushes in it cleaned everything up and it works like new. All the parts cost about 15.00 bucks. PK

I would pull the starter apart and check the switch with a ohm meter, it should not ground, if it does you need a new switch or look to see why it grounds. Also look at the endplate, lots of residue can conduct current and Short the positve terminal, clean all residue off.
If the armature has wear on it's sides the bushings are gone and need to be replaced with new ones. check the brush length, should be about 3/8 to 1/2 inch. use a hook shaped wire to put brushes back in place. if this fails to help a field coil can be toast or the armature may be burnt out.

use 1-0 wellding lead for cables and carquest has a 1100 amp battery if that doesnt spin the wizz out of the thing then its the starter 12volt battery not the sixvolt i think its part number is 31hp32 not for sure without looking at mine

Jim, that bench test dont really mean all that much cuz theres no load and a low current draw. First thing is to once more remove, clean n wire brush n reattach each n every battery n switch n starter n ground cable and try her again and use 00 gauge cables. Then make sure the battery is both good n well charged and/or have a shop load test it.

Its also possible the starter switch is bad and carboned/burned and resistive. If its a saddle mount type Id remove it for inspection n see if its all burned n carboned and/or the starter post is all burned n pitted. Finally the starter itslef may be bad like worn down brushes or worn bushings or a burned commutator or a bad armature.

Try the battery n cables n grounds n switch n the starter post FIRST and then if thats all good youre finally left with the more expensive starter repair.

Check your battery and also all connections. I had the same problem just the other day and found I had a brand new bad battery put in another and all was fine. Took the battery back and told them I was not happy with a brand new bad one

I would pull the starter off again and (scribe where ever it will part), so I could get it all lined up again.When you get it apart you may find a burnt segment on the armature which may have caused the brushes to wear down to where they do not make good contact with the armature or are worn crooked due to the brush springs not remaining in the center of the brush.Did you tap it when it fails which might indicate if they are worn too short.cleaning it and lubing can only help. Heavy Duty is a mis-leading term. To some manufacturer's, this is a 4 gauge with thicker insulation. If you want the engine to turn over well with a 6 volt battery, you need at least 0 gauge cables. I can't find these anywhere. I solved the problem by buying 1 gauge cables and then buying another set of 1 gauge cables and paralleled each of the battery cables. In effect, this yields the resistance of a 00 cable and the engines crank quite rapidly. My guess is your "heavy duty" is not heavy duty for a 6 volt system and your ground cable may not be adequate. I've had good looking cables that would not work because of high resistance.
