A friend of mine in the farm equipment business said that Briggs & Straton had recently purchased the "Allis Chalmers" name - can anyone else confirm this? What does Briggs intend to do with the name - start offering some Lawn & Garden tractors or some such with that name?

My further "inside" information has stated that Briggs has the rights to use the "Allis Chalmers" name and intends to bring out a line of small riding mowers in the spring. Look for future equipment in the spring time frame with the Allis Chalmers name and Briggs & Straton power.

Briggs & Stratton purchased Simplicity Mfg in 2004. Simplicity was a division of A-C prior to 1985. This may be what your friend was thinking of. As John mentioned, A-C Energy is alive and well in Houston, TX.

Mitch:

Though I have not heard of this development, it is possible that B&S purchased trademark rights to the AC name for use on power equipment.

Such sales of trademarks are common and do not affect the use of the name in other areas of commerce, e.g., oil field equipment.

Dean, I can see your point on this one. It would take a trademark/copyright attorney to sort through it, but if someone were to build/make something that would be a credit to the Allis-Chalmers name I could understand why Allis Chalmers Energy might be interested.

Allis Chalmers is alive and well in Texas. They are an oil equipment supplier and have seen tremendous growth over the last few years for obvious reasons. If the Allis Chalmers name were for sale AGCO would own it, but that ain't gonna happen.

AGCO did sell orange tractors with the name "AGCO ALLIS" on them for a few years but they dropped the "ALLIS" as it didn't appear to be helping sales, in fact, just the opposite might have been happening.

I am working with a couple of their guys right now and from what they are telling me, the sky's the limit for them right now. May just have to buy some AC stock.
