stuck b water in oil

Help I just got a 39 b it had water in oil about a gallon. motor was stuck but I got half a rotation today. pulled the head and have lot of water damage on top.I could not see ware water came from.No evidence on head gasket. I filled block to see if it holds water and it does. but no pressure on it. How did that water get there. any help thanks. DS

Just took down a C with the exact same problem. I soaked it but ended up pulling the head. I found two inches of water sitting on top of one piston. All the others looked good. Same thing, rain water. After pulling the pan a rod/main caps I found corrosion on the crank journals. I'd recommend looking at the rod and main bearings for water damage. Might need just a little cleaning but you could head off some expensive repairs.PK

If it were mine I would drop the oil pan(easy on B&C) and clean the rust and sludge out of pan and pick up. That stuff being circulated in the oil can do great damage quickly. Easy to make new gasket with scisors and a ticket punch an a roll of ruberized cork for under $10. Cheap insurance.
The last one I found with a gallon or so of water had lots of sludge and rust crumbs in the pan. It also was locked up by rust at the edges of all 7 bearing journals jaming the bearings. Took apart and cleaned and all parts were serviceable.

After looking at the valves I can see water stains on the ones that may have been open. there was a can on muffler but who knows how long that was on.I expectd the worst but out side the top of the motor is unbelivible clean.
the tranny fluid worked great. sleeves are geting clean no ridge and corotion is comming off is it possible to reuse sleeves piston and maybe rings? thanks a bunch DS

Pour ATF fluid and top of those pistons and keep moving the engine with your crank. As the others have said its a good possibility that water came
from rain getting in the exhaust. You could have the head magna-fluxed for cracks. I had to install new sleeves and pistons on an IH A after freeing the stuck engine. It had lots of sludge
too and I steam cleaned the block. Hal

Most of the time that water gets there because of rain and having an open exhaust pipe pointing up. Also seen that because of flood waters but 99% of the time if the head gasket is good and the sleeve seals are good its just plain rain water.

Water could have come in around the muffler at the manifold. Look at the pipe. Most of the mufflers just insert into the manifold and are held in place by a bolt in the manifold. Water can run down in there as it does not fit tight.

It could be it was sitting outside without a coffee can over the stack. HOnest. If you keep soakign the engine, moving it a little at a time, it will usually break loose. Hope this helps
