I am going to be plowing snow with my D-17, but notice that the temperature gauge stays all the way to the left. Should it run hotter? Please give me your thoughts on this.

Up here in Northern WI, I put an old winter jacket around the radiator, held in place with a rubber snubber secured to each headlight. It helps a lot. I have yet to see it overheat either (in the winter)

Any engine should run at or around 180 degrees if not a little bit warmer. You probably don't have a thermostat in it or its stuck open, or the gauge is bad.
