D17 Wide Front Axle Support Repair

My front axle support is worn bad where the front pivot pin rides (all the way through the top of the casting)! How are you guys repairing these or are you just locating a better one? Thanks, Michael

JMS, we were successful in getting the front support welded and rebored. I couldn't get my drill press to run slow enoungh for an 1 1/4" hole so I had to send it to the machine shop. In the process, I found out that the spindle bushings are worn out, so I guess that's the next job. Anyway, thanks for the help! Michael

Locating old one- well, they are just as old! Lousy design, no lube. Started farming full time in "72, with a WD and D17, Series One. Bought some JD"s since then, another D17, Series III, about 1984. Same situation- no grease zerk. Steel on cast. Get it built up with weld, Machine it to a true center, drill and tap for a zerk, and your Grandkids can hit it with a grease gun! Always liked AC, but they did some dumb stuff, like every other company!.

JMS, thanks for the reply. I figured the chances of finding a good one would be slim. I should have looked at the front end better before I bought the tractor. Seeing this support brought back memories of how much welding and machining we did on the front end of my brothers 190XT. A welding we will go! Thanks, Michael

If the pivot pin is fairly round, or can be renewed-find some round hollow stock, either brass bushing or steel, bore it to the size of the pin, then machine the casting to accept the bushing. Weld that in place, drill and tap for a zerk. Machine shop should be able to machine the casting back to round with a fly cutter or end mill. If you have access to an industrial slow poke drill with a big bit, can lay the axle on that and get it close enough to bore out to fit the bushing in before welding.
