What alternator to use for AC WD Conversion

Does anybody know what alternator to use when converting an Allis Chalmers WD from 6 volt to 12 volt? How many if any changes to the brackets need to be made?

Use the internal regulated Delco 10SI. The pulley from your generator will fit the alternator. There are many wire diagrams on the web for this convertion. Some may say to use a 1 wire alternator BUT they do not work well on a low speed engine like the WD. I used the alternator I recommended when I converted my Gleaner C-II to alternator.

Thanks for the reply. I got on to an auto parts web site and looked up an alternator for a mid 60's chevy and saw some that talked about 10si - 12si but they said they were one wire. What would be a car I could use to look up internal regulated Delco 10SI. What should the cost be approximately? Thanks again.

Hi Bob

Looking for a little clarification so I don't mess this up in the future.

The wire that connects from the output terminal to the 2 wire connector is feedback voltage to set the output voltage level right?

The other one that goes to the ignition switch is for exciting the field to start the generation process right?

What is the function of the diode?

You got it RIGHT on the feedback terminal, and "excite" terminal.

The diode prevents current from the diode trio inside the alternator intended to be used as field current as needed by the internal voltage regulator from backfeeding into the ignition system when the ignition switch is turned to "OFF". This can keep the igntion system operating, and prevent the engine from shutting down.

You can use an "idiot light", OR a resistor, OR the diode in that lead.

Any ONE of the three options is sufficient.

Besides preventing the engine from continuing to run when the ignition is switched "OFF", the diode, "idiot lamp", or resistor protect the innards of the alternator from possible damage under conditions where there's current backfeeding OUT of the alternator's #1 terminal into the igntion system or battery.

On sytems where an "idiot light" will NOT be used, I use the diode, as it can be simply taped up in the wiring harness, as it doesn't generate much heat, as the resistor option will, under certain conditions.

Mid 60s one will not work since it need a V.R wired to it. You need one from the late 70s early 80s. Tell them you want one for a 1980 chev half ton pick up. No AC etc and you can get one for around $30-40. All the one I have put on the Allis WD/WD45 was a simple bolt on in place of the genny. Long bolt and thats about it.

1979 Olds Cutlass but the terminal MAY no be phased, turned, right. I do not buy mine at the autoparts store. I buy them from the salvage yard and repair the alternator and I them install them. I have installed this alternator on 4 C-II Gleaners, an 88 Olivar diesel, and a 80 amp version I installed on my 1966 Dodge 400. I bought this alternator at a Flea Market for 50 cent. It needed a rotor. Got a used one for $20.00.

Ditto on the one wire p.o.s. delco 60 amp not generating sufficient voltage, even with smallest available pulley. will have to try your suggestion!
