Anyone ever test timing on an '39 Allis b with clamp on timing light? If set on "FIRE" mark on flywheel for hand crank speed (according to manual) then where on flywheel should the timing light hit at running speed?

Bob, try the search archives use 'timing' there are some good suggestions back in may jun 99. I have a C and a CA and I checked booth using a light. Slightly advanced. The FIRE Line was at the top of the sight whole(not middle). I don't know what RPM the warm engine was running at. I got good results for both tractors. The advance 'may' make up for the change in gasoline octane rating since 1939 until 1990. Again in past posts; these engines are very tolerant of timing error.

Nellie, Thanks for the reference back to older issues. I found them and they talked about only distributors. (I know the magneto also has a distributor cap on top) But I'm thinking the internal workings of the mag may be doing something crazy with timing after the engine starts and gets to idle speed (above crank speed).
Any experience with this? You didn't say if your C and CA had magnetos or distributors?

Thanks,
Bob
