Aggravating Allis C oil leak

I have a leak where the oil filter mounting assembly bolts to the block. I have made gaskets from paper and cork gasket material. The leak will stop for a while, then start again, and I will tighten. This will repeat itself until I eventually tighten several times and cut the gaskets. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

I had a Ferguson 40 with a Continental engine that had a blank sheet metal plate where the power steering pump attached; It leaked from the time it was new. I tried every kind of gasket. Finally, I cleaned both surfaces with laqure thinner, let it dry and used blue RTV cement. I learned that it is extremly important to clean both surfaces before applying the RTV. If the surfaces have been exposed to oil, it is a good idea to warm it with a propane torch, wipe it several times and clean with some kind of non residue solvent before applying the RTV.

If you have paint under the gasket on the block it will not seal. Most blocks are quite uneven and it takes a thick cork gasket. Run a large flat file over the filter housing where it mounts to the block. Sometimes they are not flat because of over tightening.

Thanks Dick, I will try the things you suggested. The C had been painted a few years ago so I will check the block for paint. When I put the gaskets on, I doubled the paper and cork gaskets. The cork was much thicker that the paper. I will check for straightness as well.
