Allis Chalmers WD shift rod

My shift rod slips out of place while in gear.
Usually when I try to shift too fast, leaving the tractor in gear and the shift rod flopping out of place. To put back I lift out the rod and try to find a gear to put it back.

I suspect the rod end is worn and needs to be built up. Any ideas or suggestions before I start?

The retainer on top of the ball was worn on mine when it did that. I was plowing real close to a fence when the wheel hub bolts started winding fencing so I made a quick stab for nuetral and the shifter popped out and left me in gear. I proceded to lift my plows and blew the hydraulic hose to the lift. Stuck in gear and stuck in the ground and stuck in the fence---bummer.

The link goes to Tom MN's WD45D transmission pictures. It shows what the tip of your shifter should look like, although your gears will look different unless you have a late WD. If your shifter tip is worn down, it can be built up with braze or weld and filed to shape.

If you have slop up near the ball on the shifter, there are a few things that you can look at. The recessed retained and its snap ring need to fit snugly, and are available from AGCO. If the ball is worn on top, you can place brass shimstock on top to take up the slop. The pivot pin can be replaced, and there is a replacement oversized pin available for early years, whereas two pins were used later on.

If everything on the shifter is shot, you can usually find used ones around.

It's also possible that the lugs have worn. These might be repairable with a welder and grinder if you're good at it. If you need to disassemble the components of the shift tower you might want to get a service manual. Beware of the bouncing detent balls.

Another possibility is that the forks are bent somehow. I found that the forks on my WD45 had to have been bent because the end of the shift lever was the proper width and forks were not worn. I found that the forks are fairly soft and bent back fairly easily closing up the gap. I have not had the opportunity to work it enough to know for sure that it is cured but am optimistic.
