I have 2 7040s i am considering buying. First one 7040 with powershift 8500 hours. This is a cherry of a tractor however the pto lever wont stay engaged it has to be wired foward to stay engaged. The other thing is there is a huge canister filter in the right rear of the tracter that is making a lot of noise. Is this normal?
Second on is a manual with power director approx 2500 hours (yea right) with a loader. Someone has put an electric inline fuel pump right before the injection pump. Question does the 7040 have an electric fuel pump in tank?
Only the 7040 PS seem to have a canister in the right rear position. This will be my haying tractor for the next several years and im a poor rancher so this is a big decision for me. Maybe i should look for another brand alltogether?

Like was stated, The filter near the rear end was on the powershift only. The power director has the transmission filter under the radiator. It should not buzz unless it is clogged. There is sometimes a buzz in the control valve
The inline electric fuel pump was added on later 7000 series but it was further under the transmission. No pump in the tank.
If the pto valve has to be wired, the cable is out of adjustment.

I bought a 7040 PS 4 years ago.It had been neglected by the previous owner and had a lot of minor problems, alternator didn't charge,needed a 3pt hitch control cable and high-low range cable, no mat in the cab and the air didn't work. The guy who had it before me just used it for bush hogging, he controlled the height of the 3 pt hitch with a wire hooked to the linkage on the outside of the tractor. Guess he didn't want to spend the 100 bucks for a new cable. I worked on it whenever I had time and eventually got everything fixed. Spring came and I hooked the tractor to a lime spreader, pushed forward on the pto lever but as soon as I let go it popped back and the pto stopped turning. I shut the tractor off and got out and studied the cable and linkage for a while, got back in and started it again and tied the pto lever in the on position, got out and used a screwdriver to push forward on the valve and it popped right in, so all I had to do was tighten the adjustment up on the cable a little bit and it works perfect. I like the tractor, use it to pull a Great Plains 12 ft no till drill. To me it's very easy to work on. I really like the way the side panels of the hood come off with just 2 clips. Mine only showed 1875 hrs but that's most likley not correct although the clutch and brake pedals have no wear. I paid 6000 for it but the dealer took a few small implements that I was no longer useing in trade and got it down to 4800. Good Luck

Pass on both of them ;theres lots of other ORANGE tractors out there ; a 6060 or 6080 would be better than a huge 7040 for haying ;but that is up to you ;

Yeah, but they are more expensive. I think a nice 190, 200, 210 or something like that would be cheaper and have plenty of power for your haying.

the powershift have a filter on the right rear and two under the rear end the power director only have 2 under the rear. i have seen several that make the buzzing you are talking about. the pto should stay in with hyd. psi so i wonder if it has some problems comming. the in line pump was something they did on 7045s and was probally put on to try and fix some starting, hp, or air leak problems. they dont make a nimble loader tractor and the clutch is jumpy. i have worked on a lot of them and they werent a bad tractor but for my money 4440 jd

Having worked at both an IH dealer and an AC dealer I would have to disagree respectfully. In the end there will be less spent on repairs with the 7040 unless it's a lemon.
