The smoke does not leave the exhaust pipe completely but some goes down out the bottom of the exhaust pipe and the soot darkens the nicely painted carbrator. The exhaust pipe just fits into the manifold without a seal, not a particularly snug fit either. Any suggestions on how to stop the back wash across the engine?

Dick L---That looks good. Good to know the manifold is the right size to tap. I was going to have a piece of exhaust pipe made on the machine to fix a loose muffler on the D17. I might rent the tap and try this.

None of my manifolds leak in any way. All it takes is an inch and a quarter tapered pipe tap along with an inch and a quarter pipe nipple. The original hole is the correct diameter to tap out without doing any thing to it. Might take a half hour of your time. Of course you can spend hours of time trying all kinds of things and if you leave it out in the rain and still get water in the engine. It will give you an excuse to work on your tractor rather than help was dishes or such. Your call. (:^D

Sounds like you may have another problem. I have seven allis chalmers and none of the mufflers fit really tight and have no soot problems.
You might be burning too rich or your muffler might be plugged-up some.

Tighten up the pipe fitting into the manifold. Theres a number of way to do that. #1 is shim it, #2 is to buy some manifold gop and mix it up and fill /seal up the pipe. #3 find a large washer that will fit around the pipe and weld it on so it works as a shield. #4 find a better fitting exhaust pipe.
