I removed the magneto on my newly-acquired 1938WC to retrieve a cap for the housing it bolts to that had fallen inside the housing. I unbolted the mag, laid it to the side on the frame rail, then bolted it back up. I have not been able to get that tractor running since!!
I have had two friends by to try to help me re-time it. We have had no luck getting the mag to fire in correct time to ignite the sparkplug and fire a cylinder.Anybody got a guess as to where I'm going wrong? Thanks, Dr. D

You don't say whether the tractor ever ran in the first place. If I read it by how you wrote it, I am getting the impression that all was well until you removed the mag? If such is the case and no one turned the engine or the mag over, all should still be set. Simply put the mag back in. If you just got the tractor and it has never run, then you could have any number of problems, from spark, valves, and even carb.

Send me an e-mail and I can send you the manual for the mag. Just tell me if its a J4 or a fairbanks. Both tell you how to trouble shoot/time the mag

Rod in New Hampshire has a great article on how to time mags on his web site. His link is:

Before pulling the mag note which way the rotor turns by cranking the engine. If your rotor turns
CCW your No1 plug tower will be in this position
1-3
2-4

If it turns CW its in this postion
3-1
4-2 Hal

You should have looked at the rotor before pulling the mag to see where it was pointing. Then make a note of that and don't move the engine when the mag is off. Then you you turn the rotor to the position that you made a note of and install the mag. Since you didn't do that you need to remove No1 sparkplug near the radiator and bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Hold your thumb over the plug hole while someone hand cranks the engine until you feel compression against your thumb. I would drop a "large" handle screwdriver on top of the piston and watch it rise as someone slowly cranks the engine until the screwdriver quits rising. You should be at TDC on the compression stroke.

Remove the mag and turn the rotor to the No1 plug tower and reinstall the mag. Hal
