I have the 2900 engine in my 190 and I had the problem real bad with electrolisis. The block was pitted really bad and I got it fixed. I am rebuilding the entire engine and clutch. anyways, I need to know if anyone knows of a good coolant that I can put back in the tractor, that will not get that charge in the system and start eating up my engine again. Napa sells some that is $18 a gallon, I would really like to find some cheaper stuff somewhere. Does anyone know where I can get some? What is it called if you know of any?
Thanks

Paul,

Use what you like. Today"s oils are much better than they were thirty years ago when that tractor was built. I"ve never had bad luck with any brand of oil. I do prefer Valvoline. It"s been good for my tractors.

Paul - You get what you pay for. You spent probably 1 to 2 grand on an overhaul and you want to save maybe 20 bucks on coolant to keep it from happening again?

I had the same problem with my D17 engine when it was overhauled. Had to have new deck bushings put in the bottom for the sleeves. All my work was done by my first cousin in Union, MO who is a master engine machinist who specializes in ag tractors and diesel trucks. He is very familiar with the Allis engines and has rebuild MANY of them. He recommends Caterpiller ELC coolant and that's what I run in my D17 and One-Eighty. Yes it's about 18 bucks a gallon too but you can buy extender for it so it lasts long. Get the test strips and check it each year and add extender when needed. Also, use DISTILLED water to fill. Only a buck a gallon at the grocery store. Mike

Yes, actually I have spent over $3,500 on the rebuild so far. Now that I think of it, it is a little silly I am worrying about $50 of coolant. Thanks for the information. How about oil? I live in Northern Wi. and I will be running it some this winter but not nothing severe by any means. I was going to put 15w-40 but that seems to thick for the winter, so I am thinking of 10-30 but does anyone know of any good quality diesel oil?
Thanks, Paul

I've been using Fleetgard antifreeze you can buy at TSC for $11/gal. it has the additives in it already and do as stated above and use distilled water it doesn't matter what kind of antifreeze you use all diesel engines over time will cavitat all you can do is slow it down as for engine oil you could use a straight 30w for diesels such as Rotella-T I live in Ohio and run 15w-40 Rotella-T in my diesels even in winter but thats up to you
