Hello, I have a mounted 3-14 AC plow and a D17 AC. The plow has sharp shares but I am having a problem getting adequate depth to the furrow in loose sandy soil. I sucks right down in clay or heavier soils. What am I missing in the adjustments.

We used to have a 3-14 AC mounted set of plows. Our soil was mostly heavy limestone clay. Our WD seemed to do a better quality job plowing with them than did the D17. The D17, being more powerful, pulled them a bit easier, but did not do the quality of job. I often wondered why.

Remember, the shares can be "Sharp", and still worn down.... Make sure there is plenty room between the "Frog" and the edge of the share....penetration is often linked to worn shares.. Check to see if the Heel is running to heavy in the furrow bottom, you may need to adjust it, too.. Ron.

Are you working with a 3 point hitch setup or a snap coupler system? Has the plow been used with a D17 snap coupler or was it used previously with a WD or smaller D series? If so, you might need longer turnbuckle links lifting the plow.

As well as the center link I would lower the right arm. If you drive the tractors right wheels up on blocks to the depth you are trying to plow on a flat surface and drop the plow you can check to make sure the plow is level in both directions. If not it needs to be.

Question. Shouldnt it be the left side you drive up on the blocks to simulate the attitude of the tractor when plowing?

Its heck when you cant get your feet and the signals from the brain on the same wave lenght.

I will be 70 come Jan. I had a tractor that only one year younger then me. A 1939 M Farmall.

I would start by shortening the top link a bit at a time. If it works in heavy soil but not in sand as you say, It should only be a matter of small settings. Good luck, have fun.

Thaks to all for the replys. I have/use the factory Snap Coupler set up with the plow & tractor. I will try to experiment with all of the recommendations and suspect I will have sucess.
