I have 30 degrees of play in my 1950 Allis Model B

Is it easy to adjust or replace the sterring box? When I drive down the road at a good clip the 30-degrees of play in the sterring wheel causes me to keep oversterring, left-right-left-right-etc. any suggestions?

When my C got that sloppy I found that the case and cover bolts had loosened and separated. I have a Henderson loader on mine and the steering takes a beating. Adjustments will make most steering gears reasonable. A guy I know that rebuilds antique car steering gears uses ni-rod to build up worn spots on the worm and sector and it seems to work for him and his customers.

Hey;

I built up my worn down steering arm using pencil rod, then used a small grinder to make it egg shape. Fill it up good with 90 w when you are done. I been running two years with it, and all is well. Hope this help out.

The pall/button on your cross arm probly looks like the one in the pictures below.

As the others have said. If you find you need a steering box I might have one if ones off a C will work on a B. I have 2 Cs for parts

If your talking about the big U shaped one around $65 or so give ot take a little. Shipping might not be all that bad depending on where you are. Yes I have 2 of them on hand that I would let got of for a little less then that plus shipping. E-mail is open

The worm in the B and C steering box is cut opposite, so they do not interchange. But each box will bolt into the other tractor to provide some really crazy driving.

You can make the C steering box work on the B. You do it the same way I made the B steering box work on a C front. I think you can figure it out after looking real careful at the picture.

If a person has to pay someone to do the fabricating on top of buying a C steering box he will be better off waiting for a B steering box. The splines for the C is not only larger they are not the same type. The small end of the C steering arm and a tapered hole. The small end of the B steering arm has a ball. The C steering arm is longer than the B steering arm. The cross arm on the C steering is longer and needs a support. The B torque tube is not drilled and taped for the C support. Saying that one will work on the other is not totally wrong but is not practical to say the least.

It's usually not the steering box...check the bolts on the front of the front axle spindles. Allis made these cone shaped bolts that go into cone shaped holes for both front wheels. Loosen the stop nut first, the tighten up the bolt into the spindle, then snug down on the stop bolt.

If you're sure it's the steering box, you can adjust them, but, the problem is that the worm gear usually gets a low spot in it, soooo, if you adjust it, as soon as you turn off of straight, it gets really stiff...some guys say you can turn the worm gear over 180deg to fix.

I'd bet my left arm that "Old" has a steering box laying around somewhere...

I have acquired a CA-750 and have the slop in the steering box before the arm juts out to the left side and wondering if the tricks mentioned on the C and B also apply to the CA?

Also I ordered some tech books, but am curious about getting the fluids changed, at least the engine oil to start. Does anybody have an idea of the oil used in the engine? I'm a little anxious to get it up and running, it looks like it will need a carb cleaning and inspection as well.

Be careful about betting. LOL. I do have a couple steering boxes for Cs laying around but not sure if they are the same for a B.

I said 30 degrees of play, that is, when the tractor is still I can turn the wheel 3o degrees without making any pressure to the wheels and just sloppy loose in the steering wheel before the wheels begin to turn

I have some apart in the shop and I have taken pictures but I am not sure what album they are in. Someone told that I had pictures but when I looked I didn't find them. They are just a tad harder to understand how to adjust but not all that hard.
