Grinding sound on an old Allis Model B, bearings?

The final drive pans had plenty of oil, the grinding sounds are worse on the left side, could it be the wheel bearings, is there a way to rule out other causes? and it appears buying the bearings is easy, where do you get the shims if you need them and is it a hard job for a person new to Allis Chalmers with a modicum of skill?

Just got done with a total overhaul on 2 of them. Lower bearing change will take some time with some BIG tools but can be done. Final should not have to be removed from tractor for lower bearing change. If it is the upper bearings it would be easier to find a different serviceable final drive assemble. I've done 6 unit in the past and have never been able to get the brake drums off the upper shaft without cracking it. Bearing preload is set on the lower shaft with shims under the thick washer on the inboard bolt that is under the cap by the draw bar mount. Make sure you change the outer seal too. lot of B tractors had final drive noises. the gear cut was not exact in the early years. take off in 3rd gear on the flat, then go done a slight grade so the gears are unloaded. bad bearings will whine all the time. if the noise goes away, it is probably gear mesh. ... now if you have a real "grinding" then i would look deeper.

Check the tolerance on the cast wheel center to
the axle. Could be loose on the splines behind the large nut. Chuck

Could the noise be the brake dragging. Alot of mud/mice/wasps/acorns etc. can get stuffed in there over the years.
