Im new to repairing these;how do i remove the pin holding the shift lever in the tower,I have taken off the boot and snap ring.

If I remember there is a snap ring in the top, under the boot, inside the top of the casting, above the ball on the shift lever. After you take it out the shifter will lift out, and the pin you refer to which is also a key to keep the shift lever from rotating, can be pushed inward and will fall into the transmission where you will be fishing with a magnet for a long time to find it. Don't let it fall.

David, the pin doesn't go all the way through, it's just a pivot.

Thank you Joe. I found this out.Do I have to remove a shift rail to remove the bottom portion of the shift lever to remove it.Sorry for sounding so dumb .I bought a service manual which is pretty useless.I'll probably have more questions as I proceed please be patient.

If you get some long nose pliers you can reach in and turn the reverse lockout so it will come off, but it's a real PITA to get it back on. If you remove a rail watch for the spring and ball, they fly real nice and hide even better!
