D14 Electrical question

I have a 60 D14 that I bought not running, and without a battery. I want to try to spin the motor with the starter, but am unsure what batery to use. I looked at the IT manuel, and the wiring looks correct.

The issue that I see is that the Generator is not original (looks like gm alternator). Also, if someone changed out the alternator to a 12 volt, would the voltage regulator have to have been replaced? Finally, the manuel says positive ground, if the generator were switched out to 12 volt, would the system still be positive ground?

How do I determine the voltage requirement? How do I determine the grounding polarity?

alternators since the early 70s do not require a voltage regulator, that is internal. look at the case where the two pin connector is. if the two spades are in line like this - - then it has internal voltage regulator and the old regulator is not needed. if the pins are parallel 11 then it has an external voltage regulator.

The pins are 11 position i beleive, and there is an external regulator. The battery cables have the red wire going to ground, and when I looked at the battery connector, it looked like the red bat cable fit the smaller batery post, which I thought looked like the positive post, so I thought it was positive ground.

The color of the battery cable does not mean anything. All batteries have plus and minus signs embossed or raised in the case near the battery posts - usually on top but occasionally on the side. The smaller post is always negative and the larger post is always positive. Most alternators are negative ground (though I guess positive ground alternators can be special ordered). Never seen a positive ground alternator myself.

If you connect a 12 volt battery with the wrong polarity (switch the posts), there is a possibility of wrecking the alternator. Your description is most probably a system that is negative ground. The main clues are the ground is hooked to the smaller post of the battery and you have an alternator. The battery post is absolute data. The alternator is confirming data.

Could the system possibly be a 6 volt system with a 12 volt alternator and some type of resistor? I dont see a resistor anywhere, and the wiring diagram does not call for one as far as I can tell.

I think the tractor was originally a 6 volt, so will the 12 volt system damage the starter?

No, a resistor is not possible to connector a 12 volt alternator to a 6 volt battery. You would need to have a resistor that would be able to dissipate 240 watts or more at peak charging rates. Most resistors are 10 watt or less.

12 volts will not have any bad effects on the starter. The light bulbs will need to be changed to 12 volt.

Yes, the tractor was originally 6 volt. I still have my D-14 running on 6 volt. All but 3 of my 16 tractors were originally 6 volt. But only 2 are still 6 volt - the rest are 12 volt. 6 volt systems simply draw twice as much (or more) current to start the tractor and the engine tends to turn over more slowly. A 12 volt battery recharges more quickly after starting and will last longer because its duty cycle is shorter (faster starts).

Since the conversion has been done, I'd stick with 12 volt.

If there is a 6 volt battery in the tractor (will only have 3 cells instead of 6 with a 12 volt), send me an email. That will call for more connoitering.

the Gm alternator is a common upgrade. 99.9% of alternators are negative ground, all cars since the early 60s were that way. i would just assume the tractor is 12 volt negative ground and connect up. once running, see if teh amp meter is charging.
