MY XT 190 IS GETTING WATER IN OIL I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS MORE THAN LIKELY ELECTROLISIST(A HOLE ATE BETWEEN BLOCK AND SLEEVE) I WAS TOLD THE BLOCK COULD BE REPAIRED BY JB WELD AND OF COURSE A NEW SLEEVE AND PISTON SET, OR IS THERE A VERY LIKELY HOOD THAT ONE OF THE O RINGS ON THE SLEEVES WENT BAD. ANY BODY EVER HAVE THIS HAPPENED WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFO ANY BODY HAS TO OFFER

I agree that it is probably cavitation eating up the bottom of the sleeves/deck and leaking around the o-ring seals. It can be repaired by having a GOOD machinist bore out the bottom of the block deck, make and press in new deck bushings for the affected cylinders. Better find someone who knows what they are doing though as I believe on the 2800/2900 series engine blocks you can't get new deck bushings in thru the top without deforming them then getting them back round inside the block before pressing them in.

On a D17 (226), it's easier as they'll drop in thru the top. My D17 Series IV had one bad cylinder bottom from cavitation and had to have new deck bushings put in when it got a major OH. My recommendation to prevent it going forward is GOOD coolant like CAT ELC. Make sure you use distilled water when you refill and get the test strips and check it every year. Mike

The pin hole in the sleeves will happen where the sleeves come the closest to each other. This can extend into the O-ring area. This is cause the diesal engines compression knock. The knock with some sound wave that extend to the ulta-sonic will clean the rust from the sleeves where thay come close together. You have a repeat cycle of rust and clean and then rerust. This will finally show-up as very fine pinhole letting water into the oil. Whe we had Dad's 190 apart we turnd the sleeves 90 degree on reassembly. This do not only happen on wet sleeve engines. I rebuilt a Ford backhoe with the 3 cyl. 201 engine. 100 hour after the rebuild which inculded a oversize bore job to clean up the rust from when the owner took it apart and left it in the rain, I was getting water in the oil. Pulled the head had it pressure teated, the head gasket looked good. While waiting for the head to return from the machine shop, acouple of days. There appeared in the cyliners a rust spot the size of a silver dollar one-halfway done the bore. This back-hoe had a pervious owner who was known not to maintain his equipment.

Back when I had an XT, the bore where the orings seal in the block pitted out. We had a choice of either machining out and putting a sleeve in the block bore, or replace the block. We chose the latter.

Only way to find out is to tear it down. If you find a hole or holes in the sleeve---no, JB weld does not fix that. Usually called 'cavitation'. Coolant additive can prevent that.

There are a couple of things that could cause this. The absolute least likely is electrolisis. The most likely is the o-rings at the bottom of the sleeves. Also possible is a crack in the head or a cracked block. Most likely is the bad o-rings.

Dear D&O:

It could be an o ring at the sleeve bottom counter bore. Electrolysis usually occurs between two different metals like aluminum and ferrous. Injection flash through the sleeve could also have caused this. Although one of the greatest tractors ever built this critter must be closing in on forty years old. Even the great ones need R&R sometime. best, Yeoman
