been having some electrical quirks w/the 12 v ford motorcraft alternator conversion the "old geez" in my nieborhood did. thinking about this winter just pulling it all out and going to a GM one wire, integral regulator. bsically come s down to having to run a minimal amount of wire. go or bad idea??

To add to Jon's post, the 3 wire system is really the way to go on a tractor. As soon as the engine fires, its charging. A Voltmeter is the safer way to go for a higher amp Alt system, and actually gives the operator an easy view of whether the system is charging or not. Leave the one wire units to the hotrods and automobiles. We offer 12V conversion kits for AC tractors, as well as parts, & info for the conversions. Our system uses a diode in the exciter circuit, but a small ID light works fine also. Be happy to help you out if needed. Just drop us a line or give a call.

Jon's right...the 3 wire unit is better. I put one on my Super M with a diode as an excite circuit and it charges at 1000 rpm while she's warming up...The diode prevents the alternator from keeping the tractor running after you cut it off. Here's the diagram...

The one wire Delco is fine in many applications if the machine turns the alternator fast enough to excite it and the machine is equipped with a voltmeter or ammeter to indicate if the alternator is working. If it needs more rpm than the machine can easily reach to excite, or if the machine uses an gen/alt light to indicate if the alternator is working, then the One wire is no advantage as the wiring needed is the same as a stock 3 wire Delco alternator. You can try a one wire alternator first, and if you want/need to have it excite at lower rpm, or want to add a charge indicator light, the one wire will function exactly as a 3 wire if you add the excite wiring .
If you wish to get the alternator to excite at low rpm and it does not have a charge light, you either need to add one or add a diode or resistor to the excite wire to prevent power back feed into the electrical system.
I perfer the charge light, even if it is hidden,as it is the easiest to replace if it fails. Almost any auto parts store, hardware store, truck stop, farm store has those little indicator lamps.
